Artist Statement
I am compelled to make objects-- I share pieces of myself through my work, each piece a subtle conversation between me and the viewer. I see the strange shapes I make as people, versions of myself, and enigmatic creatures. I find myself drawn to them because they are approachable yet unplaceable forms. This encourages people to investigate what they are, how they are made, and why they exist.
I am drawn to touch everything I see, and I want to invoke that same experience in the viewer. I create items that are viewed and used in specific ways; whether it is a painting that requires close inspection, a handmade ceramic vessel that creates a unique sensory experience when used, or an interactive sculptural object. Simple design elements like dots, lines, and rounded geometric forms draw the user’s interest and attention, but are subtle enough that the user is able to take their time with the work. I utilize subtle design clues, surface changes, transparencies, and moments of detail to encourage the viewer to pick up my work and investigate it. The more you interact with it, the more intimate the experience becomes.
